In the blink of an eye, cold and dreary days will be upon us and classes will be in full swing. The work is slowly beginning to pile on as classes have just begun, but it is important to try and stay stress free while enjoying the last days of sunshine. Here are five ways BD recommends you try to “de-stress” and get active outside!
In Corvallis, we are fortunate enough to be surrounded by many beautiful trails to hike and explore the stunning Oregon outdoors. An article from our issue last fall, GTFOutside by Jordyn Foster, highlighted some of these nearby trails including Green Peak Falls (Alsea), Fitton Green (Philomath), and the Trail of Ten Falls Loop (Silverton). Other local hikes include Mary’s Peak (Corvallis), McKenzie River Trail (Blue River), and Smith Rock State Park (Terrebonne). Grab your backpack, some snacks, a water bottle, and head for the hills this fall to collect your thoughts in nature’s serenity.
Running can serve as an awesome stress relief. Slip on some sneakers and take a jog through campus to clear your thoughts. If running isn’t your style, head out the door for a walk. Maybe grab a journal or a camera to document your trip around Corvallis. Exercise and creativity are both great outlets for stress.
Maybe traveling by foot isn’t your ideal way of reducing stress? Through Dixon Recreation and Adventure Leadership Institute (ALI) ™, students can check out water equipment, including kayaks. If you do not have any experience in this field, you can also check out Portland Kayak Company. Portland Kayak Company offers classes and tours along the Willamette River in downtown Portland.
Biking to class is a helpful way to get active outdoors and relieve stress. If you’re looking for some distance, ride the Highway 20 bike path from Corvallis to Albany. There are many other mild bike rides around town, including paths along the Willamette riverfront and the 55 miles of bike lanes throughout Corvallis. Explore town while the wind blows through your hair on a nice, fall afternoon to release stress.
Improve your health and relax with some outdoor yoga. Spend an afternoon with friends on your yoga mats in the MU Quad. Live Well Studio has also been offering free outdoor yoga classes at the Corvallis Farmer’s Market, which continues through November 23rd. All you need is your mat so grab some friends and head to the Corvallis Farmer’s Market on a Wednesday or Saturday morning!
Getting active and exploring the Corvallis area before cold weather sets in will serve as a wonderful stress outlet this fall. Take advantage of the sunshine and last breaths of summer while you can. These activities will not only reduce stress, but are also great ways to improve physical and mental health!
