The increasing temperatures outside can be lots of fun, but making sure your pets are cool and comfortable in the heat is important.

While we often focus on our own well-being during hot weather, it is equally important to prioritize the safety and comfort of our furry friends. As the scorching temperatures arise, cats and dogs become more at risk for heat exhaustion.

When it comes to dogs specifically, they have limited sweating capabilities such as from their paw pads, according to the American Kennel Club, so the only way they can cool themselves off is through panting, which often is not enough.

“We have kiddie pools in all of our yards,” said Alex Vigen, from Heartland Humane Animal Shelter & Care in Corvallis.

Vigen also emphasized the importance of indoor enrichment during the summer months.

Brain games and puzzles are great alternatives that can be done indoors.

Some tips and tricks from Blue Cross, an animal welfare charity, on keeping your pet cool in the summer:

  • Check sidewalk temperature with the back of your hand
  • Kiddie pools
  • Access to shade when outdoors
  • Encourage indoor enrichment activities
  • Making sure they have access to water at all times
  • Keeping a wrapped frozen water bottle in their enclosure, crate, kennel, or on their bed
  • Frozen treats
  • Cooling vests/ bandanas
  • Wet towels or mats for your pet to lay on
  • Paw protection
