Oregon State University staff and students bring the witching hour to OSU with their fall production of “Vinegar Tom” at the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts (PRAx) starting Nov. 14.
Tickets are free for OSU students with a valid student ID, $15 for non-students and $12 for seniors.
The show will run in the Ray Theater, located in the PRAx, on Nov. 14-16 and 21-22 at 7:30 p.m., and on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.
“Vinegar Tom” takes place in 17th century England and follows the hysteria of witch-callings and trials after two women are accused of witchcraft by their village.
Hank Smith, actor and second-year theatre arts major, finds “Vinegar Tom” to be a reflection of societal issues today.
“With how the election went, this show is very politically charged now,” Smith said. “Before (the election) we were kind of playing into it, but now it’s very much a statement piece.”
“Vinegar Tom” includes sensitive topics, such as the portrayal of sexual and violent situations surrounding women’s autonomy. With the current political atmosphere, these themes may hold more impact for some.
PRAx warns that “Vinegar Tom” is not suitable for everyone. If these topics are not something you wish to see, it might be best to sit this one out.
However, above all, Smith hopes that people enjoy seeing the theatrical performance that he, along with other OSU students and faculty, worked hard to create.
“I’m excited to see the reactions to (the play) because it’s … about Puritans and all that, but … we’re still these people today,” Smith said.
The showing on Nov. 22 will have sign language interpretation with the performance.
