This year, Rainbow Continuum is hosting their annual drag show on May 2 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom at Oregon State University.
Rainbow Continuum is an advocacy group at OSU that holds weekly meetings that provide a space for LGBTQ+ students. They are about to reach 50 years as a queer advocacy group at OSU and plan to celebrate that in the coming academic year.
For their theme this year, Rainbow Continuum has chosen cancel culture.
“‘Cancel Culture’ goes beyond what we consider ‘call-out culture,’ and instead dwells into the current erasure, or ‘cancelling,’ of queer culture and history in our society,” said Daiz Sondag, the event coordinator of this year’s Rainbow Drag Continuum, over email.
Sondag said students can expect costumes, lip-syncs, comedy and live performances.
“The audience will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite competing performer,” Sondag said, “(and) the winner is crowned and given the title of ‘Beaver Royalty’ at the end of the show.”
This year, with their drag show, Rainbow Continuum aims to not only represent queer identities but to stand up against anti-LGBTQ and anti-trans rhetoric.
“We want our performers to express how they personally show resilience and authentic queer identity/culture during a time when we are facing more barriers to our rights and basic needs,” Sondag said.
The link to reserve tickets will open on Friday and is free to the general public. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.
