Home Cooking highlights family recipes from international students. In this episode, Meisen shows the delicious process of preparing Char Siu Barbeque. 

The recipe is a traditional meal from the country of China.

Ingredients

For the meat:

  • Pork shoulder

For the Sauce:

  • Vodka (or Chinese white wine)
  • Granulated sugar
  • Ginger
  • Garlic powder
  • Raw honey
  • Chinese barbeque Char Siu seasoning (2)
  • Char Siu sauce
  • Chinese five spice powder

Instructions

Step 1: Scoop two big spoonfuls of raw honey into a bowl. 

Step 2: Next, add two char siu seasoning packets to the bowl.

Step 3: Scoop three spoonfuls of char siu sauce into the mixture.

Step 4: Then, sprinkle Chinese five spice powder into the bowl.

Step 5: Generously add ginger powder and white pepper to the sauce.

Step 6: Sprinkle garlic powder into the bowl.

Step 7: Next, add vodka to create enough liquid to soak the meat in.

Step 8: Stir marinade together.

Step 9: In an air-tight container, add meat to the sauce and marinate meat for 24-48 hours.

Step 10: After marinating the pork shoulder, preheat the oven to 425 degrees and bake the pork for two hours.

Step 11: Add 1 tsp of sugar to the glaze sauce.

Step 12: Next, cook leftover marinade in a saucepan on simmer, stirring constantly.

Step 13:  Add cornstarch as needed to thicken.

Step 14: Cook marinated until a glaze sauce forms. Then, take the meat out of the oven and cover the meat with the glaze.

Step 15: Finish cooking char siu barbeque for the remaining time.

Step 16: Cut pork into small slices and serve on a bowl of rice with a side salad. Enjoy!
