Looking for a fun new way to fill your evening with free food?
The OSU Cheese Education Club is a gouda way to get out of your room and find some community!
“It’s a super chill club, very very low effort,” says Mariela Neiberg, the social media manager for the Cheese Education Club.
This club started the Winter term of the 2024-2025 school year and is still finding their groove for meetings and events.
The meetings kick off with a fun educational video about cheese making, “for some reason, they’re all about cheddar cheese,” Neiberg says.
Then the officers give a detailed presentation of each of the three cheeses they are trying that week. The cheeses being brought in are from various cultures such as France or Mexico and have the option to be paired with crackers and fruit.
Then club members socialize the rest of the time, bonding over their shared love of cheese.
“You get to meet lots of new people from different parts of school,” Neiberg says, “a lot of clubs tend to be sort of focused on one specific department or major. I like this club because it’s a wide variety of people.”
With the club numbers ranging from fifteen to thirty people on average, it is a tight-knit community where you get to try new things and meet new people.
One highlight of the club was from a cancelled meeting due to technical difficulties. “We still got all of the funding that we were going to use for that meeting,” Neiberg says.
The next meeting they had was outside of normal meeting times, “we still announced it on Instagram, and email,” Neiberg says. “That one was really fun, we had all of our greatest hits, cheeses from previous terms that people really liked.”
Neiberg says that the officers of the club “are all big fans of cheese,” as well as the members.
But, cheese is “expensive at the grocery store, so this is our best bet to try new and unusual cheeses,” Neiberg says.
One of the club favorites is Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar from Face Rock Creamery. “This one was so good that when I went home, back to Portland last weekend, I made my dad buy some and try it,” Neiberg says.
Welcoming newcomers into the club is “the biggest responsibility that we have as officers,” Neiberg says.
“Talking to people and getting to know them, just making people feel welcome in general. But everyone is usually super friendly!”
